The SMSF Sector Reinvents Itself: Younger Professionals Leading the Charge
Australia's SMSF sector is in great shape. As of 30 June 2025, there are 653,062 SMSFs with 1,203,127 members, holding a whopping $1.05 trillion in assets. That's no small feat. In the June quarter alone, 11,000 new funds were created.
Here’s what’s driving that upward trajectory:
A Shift in Trustee Demographics
Most SMSF members are still 45 and older - but get this: the 35 to 44 age group accounts for 37% of new SMSF entries, despite representing just 12% of all existing members. Meanwhile, those aged 60+ make up over half the membership, but account for less than 10% of new fund establishments in the June quarter.
In other words, younger Aussies - especially professionals are taking control. It’s not just about money; it’s about autonomy, strategy, and purpose.
Growing Wealth & Contributions
Here’s how the numbers stack up:
Average asset per member (as of 30 June 2024): $881,000
Average assets per fund: $1.6 million
Member contributions in 2024: $19.9 billion, almost triple the $6.3 billion in employer contributions.
This tells a clear story: SMSF trustees aren’t just committed - they’re actively investing and building wealth.
