The Big Crypto Comeback - How Aussies Are Rethinking Digital Assets

Crypto investing in Australia isn’t what it used to be. The latest BTC Markets Investor Study Report 2024-25 reveals a shift that even seasoned SMSF trustees can’t ignore. We’ve moved from crypto being the playground of early adopters and day-traders to becoming a genuine consideration in long-term wealth strategies.

What’s fascinating is who’s leading the charge. It’s not just the Zoomers anymore. Boomers are now jumping in - some reports note a 723% surge in deposits from over-60s. Women, too, are claiming a bigger piece of the crypto pie, coming in with higher initial deposits and more deliberate investment plans.

That maturity shows up in trading patterns. Gone are the frantic buy-and-sell habits of 2021. Investors today are taking a more strategic approach: larger trade sizes, longer hold periods, and tighter diversification. In short, Aussies are treating crypto more like a long-term asset class - not a punt.

And for SMSFs? The data’s crystal clear. Registrations on BTC Markets’ platform jumped 69% year-on-year, while trading volumes exploded by 151%. Around 77% of those SMSF trades went into the big three - Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP - showing trustees aren’t dabbling; they’re allocating.

This evolution is exciting but it also raises the stakes. As more SMSFs adopt digital assets, the spotlight turns to governance. Think compliance, audit trails, valuations and custody. These aren’t optional extras; they’re core to running a compliant fund. The message is simple: you can’t treat crypto like a hobby when it sits inside your super.

The report also hints at something deeper - confidence. As the global crypto market cap pushes past USD 3 trillion, Australians are recognising that blockchain isn’t a fad. Regulatory clarity is improving, technology is maturing, and investors are getting savvier. That’s a recipe for sustainable participation.

Still, let’s keep it real. Volatility hasn’t disappeared. Nor have liquidity issues or security risks. But the narrative is shifting from speculative to strategic. For SMSF trustees, that’s the sweet spot - the ability to diversify into new-age assets while staying disciplined and compliant.

The coming year will show whether this wave of Boomer and SMSF adoption holds up under market pressure. If it does, crypto may well become a permanent fixture in the self-managed super landscape.

Because, as I always say — freedom and control are what SMSFs are all about. Crypto might finally be finding its structure.
